Sambor Prei Kuk is a former capital and was previously named Isan Borak and once a capital of Chenla between 7th and 8th century in pre-Angkorean period. A religious center dedicated to Shiva, Sambor Prei Kuk temple is made of solid brick and some laterite stone and is decorated with sculptures. The artistic front of Sar Sor Pich (Diamond pillar) and the door frames are made of sandstone. This temple was abandoned in 1971 and restored in 1980. A further 140 sites has been found in the forest nearby and two other known temples have yet to be discovered. They are not big but unique in it's style of lintel (Sambor Prei Kuk style), relief on the wall of the temples (flying palace) and octagonal plan.
